St George and the fight against today’s Dragons!
Many today cuddle up to dragons and think they are a nice fantasy. Indeed there are programmes ranging from Merlin, Eragon and Game of Thrones and songs like ‘Puff the mighty dragon’ that make a dragon seem something nice to know, to have or even to ride! But I prefer the accounts of JRR Tolkein in the Hobbit and stories like St George and the dragon as this captures the Western view that we have dragons to fight and dragons to slay. In the words of G K Chesterton:
“Fairy tales do not give the child his first idea of bogey. What fairy tales give the child is his first clear idea of the possible defeat of bogey. The baby has known the dragon intimately ever since he had an imagination. What the fairy tale provides for him is a St. George to kill the dragon.” [G. K. Chesterton, Tremendous Trifles].
If you ever come to St Mary Magdalene’s church in Stony Stratford you will go through two doors, the outer and the inner doors. Above the inner door you will find a platform that extends out from the choir’s balcony and it hangs over your head. But you will only get a good view of what is on this platform when you walk down the centre aisle to the sanctuary and then turn round and march back up the aisle. And when you do you will see a dark wooden sculpture of St George on his trusty steed lancing the dragon. For when any of us depart after Mass we are called by the Dismissal to follow the example of St George and slay the dragons of the world. And in that daily struggle against the forces of darkness we are given the Sacrament of the Eucharist in the Mass to give us the grace to fight this good and holy fight!
So, the statue of St George on his trusty steed slaying the dragon is an excellent symbol of New Evangelisation for it gives us the subjective dimension of the work of New Evangelisation represented by the figure of St George and the objective dimension of New Evangelisation represented by the figure of the dragon.
Let us first consider the Subjective dimension of New Evangelisation, namely St George. The spiritual seal for the mission of New Evangelisation is given to us when we receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. In this Sacrament we receive that fire and power of the Holy Spirit that makes us a Soldier of Christ, a Servant of Christ in the Vineyard of the Lord and a Witness unto death for the proclamation of the Goodnews of Our Lord Christ!
As a Soldier of Christ we are given the formation that enables us to defend the Catholic Faith that is both the original and the integral form of the Gospel and we call this Apologetics. But to do this work our very being needs to be transfigured by the sacramental grace of Christ such that being in the state of his grace means we have put on the armour of God. This armour means the grace of Our Lord Jesus requires:
the girding of our loins with truth: chastity for integrity where passions & desires serve reason and truth by remaining in the order of the love of God;
the putting on of the breastplate of righteousness: the loving of the good through knowledge of the 10 Commandments and through the practice of the theological and cardinal virtues as exemplified by the Saints;
the shodding of our feet with the equipment of the gospel of peace: by doing the spiritual and corporal works of mercy;
the taking of the shield of faith, with which we can quench all the flaming darts of the evil one: by letting our minds be conformed to the mind of Christ: eg meditating on the Creed;
the putting on of the helmet of salvation: so we see how the story of salvation translates into our daily lives through the Word of God, the Mass, sacraments & the God-incidences in our life;
and the wielding of the sword of the Spirit: a life in the Spirit by constant prayer and use of the Scriptures whereby he prompts, inspires, speaks to us and leads us.
As a Servant of Christ we are called to work in the vineyard of the Lord which is the parish to which we have been called to do some Sacred Service [ministry or service using our skills, our talents, our treasure and our charisms].
As a Witness of Christ we are called to make visible our discipleship to our Lord and Master through following his example of love, namely, loving God above all things and loving our neighbour for the sake of God. A witness that encompasses the Corporal and Spiritual works of Mercy but it also includes taking insults, ridicule and rejection for the sake of Our Lord Jesus Christ to win hearts and minds to his Divine Mercy.
The Objective dimension of New Evangelisation is embodied in the figure of the Dragon! However, only when we are on the steed of God, which is that state of grace that carries us against the foe but also helps us to flee from the ambushes, snares and deceptions of the foe, can we fight the Dragon. The fight against the Dragon is on many levels and in a broken world as ours this Holy War is also on many fronts.
The Dragon seeks to consume the children of God via human sacrifice be it on the black altars of abortion, euthanasia, IVF, human experimentation, child trafficking, child abuse and child killing; it is what Pope John Paul II called the Culture of Death.
The Dragon seeks to deflower the innocent, the chaste, the virgin, the married, the young and the old and make them addicts to the cult of sensuality.
The Dragon is not just a murderer but also a liar that spins out lies that led our first parents out of paradise, life and integrity into the wilderness of sin, death and deception; as time moved on from the time of Noah the Dragon led thousands and millions into wars, revolts, revolutions and the othering of human beings as enemies rather than brothers and sisters and thus the sin of Cain was repeated over and over again; and now the Dragons of the West are seeking to provoke World War III.
Today the Dragons are revealed in the elite globalists who are possessed by an all consuming hunger for gold that Tolkein described as ‘dragon sickness’: they are happy to make millions as they kill millions by implementing policies that save the planet but starve the common folk and freeze the common people [the Green Altar of Environmentalism has now turned into the black altar of Human Sacrifice]!
And Dragons occupy the dens of power that rule nations and all have become traitors as they deliberately forego the constitutions of their countries to follow the same Global script as they:
deprive the common man of liberty and movement through the new Lock Downs of 15 minutes zones and smart cities;
remove farmers from their lands to prevent food crop production;
remove the roof from over the heads of householders as the interest rates are raised and so they fail to make their payments;
limit proper food through imposing GM foods and installing insect menus in school dinners so that food parasites run riot in the human bellies of children;
and switch down or switch off, by smart-tech, the heating that should have warmed the bones of the poor, the elderly and the commoner in the winters to come!
The watchwords of todays dragons are: ‘Build, Back, Better’, as they tear down all that belongs to Western civilisation and in it’s place they give the masses those familiar prisons, the Gulags; they give the familiar medical procedures once practised by the Nazis, namely, inserting serpentine fangs of toxicity; and giving the familiar propaganda, politics and psych-ops of fear channelled by MSM to control, corral and divide the people!
Meanwhile our young people cry out that they are ‘Woke’ as, like Turkeys voting for Christmas, they think they will save the planet by going along with these mad dragons that are now Green Dragons of a Green Apocalypse!
Time for sanity! Time for another view! Time for reflection! Time for Wisdom! In the words of the prophet Jeremiah [6:16]:
Thus says the Lord:
Stand at the crossroads, and look,
and ask for the ancient paths,
where the good way lies; and walk in it,
and find rest for your souls.
But they said, “We will not walk in it.”
Right now there are people across the land asking questions like how did we get into this Green mess, this dragonscape? How is King Charles III able to take the coronation oath given that he seems to have given his allegiance to Klaus Schwabb and the World Economic Forum? How are MPs and Town and City councils able to impose draconian laws that contradict Magna Carta and the British Constitution?
We seem to be in a Constitutional crisis that impacts on our liberties, on our identities and on our livelihoods and the MSM does not give a monkeys about any of it. Well, maybe it is time for the people of England to speak and to act as our leaders, our MPs, our Lords, our Councillors and our Media moguls are drunk with dragon sickness.
The people of these isles have been forgotten and neglected for far too long and I think these words of G K Chesterton in his poem The Secret People are becoming ever more apt in our times - so leaders and dragons beware!
We hear men speaking for us of new laws strong and sweet,
Yet is there no man speaketh as we speak in the street.
It may be we shall rise the last as Frenchmen rose the first,
Our wrath come after Russia’s wrath and our wrath be the worst.
It may be we are meant to mark with our riot and our rest
God’s scorn for all men governing. It may be beer is best.
But we are the people of England; and we have not spoken yet.
Smile at us, pay us, pass us. But do not quite forget.
